On May 18-19, China is hosting the first-ever China–Central Asia summit. Chaired by Xi Jinping himself, in the wake of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, the gathering is expected to be attended by the presidents of all five countries in the region: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The webinar examines the implications of China’s increasing economic and political influence, and whether the newly increased interest in the region by the United States, the European Union, and Turkey might counterbalance it. Panelists will thus also address the significance of this great-power rivalry for the future of the broader international order.
