Drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are rapidly becoming critical infrastructure. Over the past three years, their deployment has exploded across logistics, public safety, critical infrastructure inspection, and military operations. Powered by AI, autonomous navigation, and cloud-connected systems, drones are no longer niche devices. They are part of a new cyber-physical ecosystem. But with this rapid adoption comes a new and largely overlooked attack surface. UAV systems combine software, RF communications, sensors, firmware, and cloud platforms. They rely on multiple communication layers including control links, telemetry, GPS, and video streams. These highly distributed systems connect drones, operators, ground stations, and mission infrastructure in real time, creating complex environments that traditional cybersecurity tools were never designed to monitor.
Threat actors are already exploiting these gaps.
GPS spoofing, signal jamming, telemetry interception, and even full drone hijacking are emerging threats that security operations centers (SOCs) must now consider. At the same time, many SOC teams lack visibility into RF communication layers or the expertise needed to analyze UAV protocols such as MAVLink or drone firmware attack surfaces.
The result: a growing blind spot in enterprise and national security.
